Description

Explanation

Fair Weather

Cloud coverage less than 1/8 and there is little or no chance of showers.

Generally fair weather

Fair but at times the cloud coverage may increase to 5/8 with the possibility of light showers.

The clouds may not be the precipitating type.

Mainly fair weather

Cloud coverage less than 5/8 with the possibility of light showers.

Mostly fair weather

Cloud coverage less than 3/8 and there is little or no chance of showers.

Mostly cloudy

Cloud coverage, at any instant, equal to or greater than 5/8.

Partly cloudy

Cloud coverage may vary between 1/8 and to 7/8 during the forecast period.

Cloudy

Cloud coverage greater than 5/8 but lesser than 8/8.

Varying cloudiness

Cloud coverage may vary between 1/8 and to 7/8 during the forecast period.

Overcast conditions

Sky completely covered by clouds.

Clear sky

No cloud present during the forecast period.

Occasional cloudy spells

Two or more times, cloud coverage may be greater than 5/8 but lesser than 7/8 oktas.

Sunny weather

Cloud coverage less than 2/8 and no chance of showers.

Dry weather conditions

Sky clear to partly cloudy with 50% or more locations experiencing no rainfall.

Showers

Precipitation whose intensity increases or decreases rapidly. Such precipitation has abrupt beginning and end and lasts for periods of short duration, usually 15 minutes and followed by clear sky

Scattered showers

Showers may occur at one or more locations but the total area at any time is greater than 1/8 but less than 5/8. At most 3 showers may affect any particular location during the forecast validity period but the time separation between showers shall be greater than one hour.

Isolated showers

A particular location shall not be affected by more than two showers during the forecast validity period.

Occasional showers

Two to four showers occurring during the forecast period but the showers are well separated in time.

Frequent showers

More than four showers occurring at frequent intervals with little or no time separation between them.

Passing showers

One or two showers of light intensity of short duration less than 5 minutes.

Light showers

Showers, rainfall rate equal to or greater than 0 mm per hour but less than 2.54 mm per hour.

Moderate showers

Showers, rainfall rate equal to or greater than 2.54 mm per hour but less than 25.4 mm per hour.

Heavy showers

Showers, rainfall rate is equal to or greater than 25.4 mm per hour.

Rain

Rain is precipitation having uniform intensity; the sky remains overcast even when the rain has stopped falling

Continuous rain

The rainfall is continuous if it falls for two or more hours without stoppage.

Intermittent rain

Stopped and recommenced at least once.

Light rain

The rainfall rate is equal to or greater than 0 mm per hour but lesser than 2.54 mm per hour.

Moderate rain

The rainfall rate is equal to or greater than 2.54 mm per hour but lesser than 25.4 mm per hour.

Heavy rain

The rainfall rate is equal to or greater than 25.4 mm per hour.

Wet

Sky cloudy or overcast. 50% or more locations experience rainfall of 5 mm or more.

Rainy

Sky cloudy or overcast. 50% or more locations experience rainfall of 1 mm or more.

No significant rainfall

Cloud coverage may vary but less than 7/8. 50% or more locations experience rainfall of less than 1 mm.

Fine

State of sky will be partly cloudy and no precipitation will occur during the forecast and over the forecast area.

Warm

A departure from the mean temperature for the past 5 days.

Radar observed, Showers

Are detected by their small sizes (distances of about 5 km) and by the high variable returned power.

Radar observed, Rain

Rain echoes are of large sizes (distances of over 50 km) and are of uniform returned power.

Satellite observation

On satellite images with sufficient resolution, showers appear as cells while rain occupy wide areas and do not appear as intense as the showers.
